6 Steps To Become A CPEng In Australia

Australia has become no less than a paradise for engineers from backward or developing countries. If one becomes a CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer) in Australia, then they have an obstacle-free pathway leading to unparalleled growth. Apart from that, Australia is considered to be one of those countries where engineers feel that they are getting the actual pay for their capability.

However, attaining Chartered status in Australia requires one to be registered by Engineers Australia. It is Engineers Australia (EA) that confers this prestigious title upon a qualified engineer. The engineering professional has to prove CPEng Engineers Australia competencies through the Stage 2 Competency Standard assessment. If you are one of such aspirants, then read this blog. Here, we will familiarize you with the 6 steps leading to Engineers Australia CPEng status. So, let’s move ahead.

Engineers Australia recognizes a candidate as a CPEng Australia in one of the following occupational categories:
  1. Professional Engineer
  2. Engineering Technologist
  3. Engineering Associate

6 Steps to become a CPEng:

    Step 1 (Self-assessment)

  1. Choose your occupation category after thorough consideration.
  2. Select the one that best harmonizes with your particular Area of Practice.
  3. Enter your Level of ability for all the 16 competencies. The level will be Functional or Above.
You are allowed to rate yourself as ‘developing’ in any of the competencies. The submitted information can be updated later on.

    Step 2 (Industry review)

  1. To get an honest opinion, you need to check with an experienced manager or mentor to know whether you are eligible for being Chartered.
  2. For your industry review, you have to have a reviewer that will support the ratings you gave to each of the 16 competencies in Step 1.
  3. You can also choose multiple reviewers.
  4. Tell briefly why you have provided the specific rating to yourself, what proof you will submit later, and why feel that proof will be helpful. Evidence shouldn’t be more than 10 years old at the submission time.
  5. After being rated as Functional/Above in each of the 16 competencies, you will receive the ‘Apply for Chartered’ option on your Industry Review profile.
  6. Now, you can move further for enrollment.
Generally, Industry Reviewers are EA’s Chartered members or the ones having more than 7 years of relevant experience.

    Step 3 (Enroll for Chartership)

You are required to have soft copies of your Photo ID and the latest detailed resume. You will also need a Credit card for payment purposes.

For enrollment, you need to be a Member of Engineers Australia.

You also need to have 5 years of post-graduate experience in the industry.

Confirm Area of Practice, upload document and read carefully and confirm Terms and Conditions.

Make a payment. A confirmation mail will be sent.

Once an assessor has checked your application, you will be contacted directly through a phone call to discuss with you the documentary proof.

    Step 4 (Chartered proof)

Show your work.

An evaluator will call you to discuss the proof that you have proposed to provide. You can use the phone call to ask for answers to any questions you may have concerning the process.

Keep the evidence list that you have proposed to submit.

The evaluator will go over the proof with you and may then suggest some refinements or alternative proof.

A mail will be sent to upload the proof.

Keep in mind that you may be asked for extra proof too.

     Step 5 (Interview)

Before the interview, go through the Code of Ethics on the Engineers Australia website.

The interview can take place either via Skype or in-person.
