CIOB CPD

CPD, which is called Continuing Professional Development, is any learning that improves your occupational knowledge and skills and adds value to them. It provides support to individual development and the upkeep of professional competency. It might mean honing current skills, which means improving them to the next level, or it could mean learning new ones. You will also be able to attend relevant events, seminars and conferences, read magazines and websites or conduct research about new products and innovative methods that can pay contributions to CPD.

A Professional Review is the final stage towards Chartered Membership for most candidates. The primary objective of this review is to find out if you have the required knowledge and expertise needed in three key areas:

What are the required steps for the Professional Review?

  • Academic & Experience requirements Your application will only be considered if you meet the academic eligibility requirements, and if you have at least 3 years of relevant experience (5 years if you do not have an honors degree in a built environment). To be academically eligible, you must possess a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Membership The CIOB recommends that you become a non-chartered member (Applicant). Applicants should create an account and apply for membership here if they do not yet have an account.
  • Download the Professional Review Download the application form to fill in the details.
  • Guidance notes Among the supporting documents that you will need to provide, you'll need to read the guidance notes that are provided with the application form. These will describe what you need to send with your application, such as an updated CV and CPD certificates.
  • Verification It is important to have an endorsement from your line manager as well as your clients. More details are in your support materials.

Before you start with the Application form

Please read the following guidelines before starting your application. The application has 5 major sections. Completion of all sections is mandatory before submission. You must write about your career advancements and competencies in your own words. You must also submit the documents listed below:

  • All candidates must hold current membership before application
  • Your CV
  • Job description
  • You should have an organization chart with your name, position, responsibilities, and reporting lines
  • CPD records for 12 months (only required if you have been a member for more than a year)
  • Please note that we can only process applications that include all of the above. If you leave anything out, your application will be delayed. Please make sure your action plan is a comprehensive one that has personal and company goals.

What Are The Requirements For The Professional Review?

A competency review can determine if you are knowledgeable, skilled, and have the behavior to perform the work of qualified Chartered Builders or Chartered Construction Managers. The competencies developed by members of the CIOB are meant to apply across different disciplines within the industry. The competencies fall under the following categories:

Assessors will take into account sensible and realistic choices reflecting the skills that are required for the role, whilst making sense of your interpretation. The choices listed in your application should be examples of your work and judgment.

Application

As a member, there will be key stages where we request personal identification documents to verify your identity. One of those key phases is the professional review process. Applicant Statement

To become a member, you must sign a declaration and submit a short, concise statement explaining why you would like to join.

Competence Report

Candidates must demonstrate competence in all three competencies listed below if they want to pass the Professional Review:

  • Occupational Competence
  • Management Competence
  • Commitment to Professionalism

Each competency section is organized by evidence, verification by employer or verifier, and guidelines on how competence must be achieved. This should be based on experiences rather than modules or courses you have studied about this topic.

Do’s

  • Please read the Candidate Guidelines before you write your competence report. It explains the process and what you need to include in your report.
  • Please include specific, clear, and detailed examples of your practice to demonstrate the competencies.
  • Don't forget to use 'I did...' to describe your experience.
  • You can discuss the pros and cons of your decisions after each example. Could you explain why you acted as you did?
  • Candidates who submit superior applications will reflect on their practice, showing how they will approach future tasks differently.
  • Whenever possible, use complete sentences and paragraphs.
  • Explain and prove your competence using all available space.
  • A good opener is to say something self-evident, like 'Operational safety is important to the organization...' or 'Planning and organization are essential to the smooth running of...'. Make sure you use the right words and language while writing.
  • An assessor does not look for million-pound projects. At the end of the day, they are looking for evidence that you are competent, you understand your limits of competence and responsibilities, and you make ethical decisions and learn fast to develop.
  • Make sure to check your report for spelling and grammatical errors. If your report does not appear to be proofread, the PR Team will send it back.

Don’ts

  • Don't overuse phrases like 'we do this at...' or 'we follow company...'. Too many of these suggest that you don't work independently.
  • Neither your job duties nor job description should be listed.
  • Don't describe company policies. For instance, my company has... The assessor is interested in knowing about you and your practice. You can refer to company policies that inform your practice.
  • You must not assume that having worked on prestigious sites or large projects means that you are competent. That is simply not true.
  • Describe your experience and responsibilities accurately and do not exaggerate or misrepresent them.
  • Avoid bullet points. They imply you can't give substantive examples in the boxes.
  • In your report, keep acronyms to a minimum as well as mention the company's full title.

Example CIOB is seeking examples of your work activities that are clear and current. Use this example to help structure your reports. Please do not send CIOB full reports.

Application Checklist

If you are almost ready to submit your Professional Review Report, please be sure that it contains all the information we are expecting.

Our goal is to avoid having to contact you again for further information, which would slow down the assessment process. By meeting these requirements, we can directly send your report to the Assessor. Depending on your experience, the areas listed below will result in your report being returned if they are not covered.

CPD

Your report must include evidence of the continuous professional development you have completed during the past year (only if you have been a member for at least a year).

Organisation Chart

Please include a diagram showing where you fit within your organization, showing your manager and anyone who reports directly to you.

Action Plan

Attach a document that includes your action plan for the upcoming year, including your goals and goals for the company, as well as your training and development plans.

Personal CV

A generic company CV is not acceptable. Attach the recent and updated Curriculum Vitae (CV).

Presentation

Reports should be narratives with examples from everyday practice. Please avoid using bullet points, lists, or headings. Make sure you use spell and grammar checkers as well as to ensure that your report communicates what you intend. It can be helpful to have a colleague read your report for you. Remember that you are applying for the MCIOB assessment, not your colleagues. Your report needs to be written in the third person, not in the plural.
