They must also take a lead in propagating the idea of the environment and place those ideas in a transparent manner in front of the colleagues as well as some other more audience.

In order to obtain professional membership, there are four stages with or without registration:-

  • Educational Base – An authorised qualification of level 7 such as degree in Masters or any alternate qualification like Bachelor’s degree topped with MSc or PhD or any training scheme of an authorised company, which needs to be evaluated. The applicants, who does not fulfil the required criteria can also apply through the Technical Report Route (TRR) and should consult the TRR guide.
  • Initial Professional Development – In the early and developmental year of employment structured development is displayed which also includes gaining experience in responsibilities. This can be via formal IPD plan or through general experience in work.
  • Professional review – submission of the proof and assessment of the same through associate review process to discover whether the contender has obtained both professional competence and a commitment to professional codes.
  • Sustainable Professional Development – An obligation to maintain competence to practice.

The applicants are assessed against the set standards of Competence and Commitment that can relate to their own individual qualification and kind of registration, for which the application is made. Applicants for CEng MIMMM would be assessed on the basis of Engineering Council’s UKSPEC, which are for CSci MIMMM against the standards of science council and for CEnv MIMMM against the practice direction of the society for environment. To award MIMMM IOM3 is best owed with their own standards, where the applicant has made a place for this free standing qualification. Further details of the qualifications are given in the appendices.

Completing the application form

The application must be submitted after completion with the supported documents. It is empirical to complete all the sections of the form even if certain sections are magnified in the professional review report. Form must be printed or written in block capital letters. The application form can be availed from the IOM3 website at www.iom3.org/professional-member

SECTION A – PERSONAL DETAILS section A all the details must be completed, which also includes membership number (if the applicant is already a member)

Those who are applying for CEng, CSci, or CEnv registration the referee must also refer to those grades of registration. Referee must be aware of the applicant for at least two years and must be able to evaluate the current knowledge of the applicant and experience in the responsibility levels. Referee should also act as a sponsor.

When anapplicant does not know any IOM3 member or people of other engineering or science institution that holds the respective grade to get register as referee, family member or junior of the applicants’ company cannot be accepted as a referee.

SECTION E – DECLARATION The applicants and their referee must sign the declaration form at the end of the application form and the referee must sign all the supported documents.

THE PROFESSIONAL REVIEW REPORT

The professional review report is an extended resume that provides detailed career graph of the applicant. It gives opportunity to the contender to display their experience in managerial and technical training.

For holding each position the contender should provide description of their responsibility and function, specifically the materials or natural resources, techniques and processes they are well acquainted with.

The professional review report must link the contender’s career development to the required grades of the proficiency and obligations they are applying for.

The professional review report should not only display the progress in career, but also establish estimated length of period the contender has been working at the responsibility level appropriate to being a MIMMM and or /CEng /CEnv/ or CSci.

THE CASE STUDY

For those who are applying for MIMMM separately, a case study is not required for them but is required for those who are looking for registration as CEnv, CEng, or CSci or for those who are looking for MIMMM for the purposes of Resources Reporting and Mineral Reserves.

The objective of the case study is to provide examples of work and show the desired capabilities required to impress the assessors. As a basis for questioning at the professional review interview, it will be used by the professional review panel. The applicants are told to select a project or a maximum of two smaller projects, which will display the reach of their experience, knowledge, technical ability and extent of responsibility.

A suggested and known format for the case study is:

  • Title:The nature of the topic or simply the topic should be mentioned here.
  • Synopsis or Background:This section should show potentiality and importance of the topic. It must also furnish details like project case, process of conducting the project and so on.
  • Technical content:This contains detailed information of project planning, techniques and procedures used, technical and budgetary limitations, and the role of contender in project management.
  • Outcomes:This contains technical and financial achievement and impression and conceivable applications.

It is important for the applicant to write the report in first person showing their contribution towards the project. This should stress in “I” rather than “we”. They must be able to assess the impact. Those who are applying for CEng should display the work proportions in engineering, for CEnv the environmental proportion and for CSci the scientific proportion.

If the applicantis not able to tell their own contribution in project, it is assumed that the project was not completely their responsibility and they would not get full credit for the work.

Record of CPD

The applicant should include an updated record of all the important CPD (Continuous Professional Development) activities in their submission of the application. The policy of IOM3 on CPD can be found at www.iom3.org/content/professional-development. It is the personal responsibility of the applicant to participate in CPD. The minimum amount of CPD is recommended to take is 35 hours each year.

CPD must be a mixture of activities of learning which is relevant to current and future practice and includes the following categories:

  • 1. Learning based in work
  • 2. Professional activities
  • 3. Formal learning
  • 4. Learning by self directed
  • 5. All other activities, which grows individual professional knowledge, skills, understanding or experience.

Information that is included in the CPD record is:

  • 1. Date
  • 2. Type i.e learning based on work
  • 3. Hours of CPD
  • 4. Formal activities and title provider
  • 5. Outcomes of the project should be precise and must stroke an impression right away. This should state how an individual in benefitted with professional knowledge, skills, understanding or experience. A Xerox copy of the personal details from the applicant’s passport should also be submitted.

IOM3 TRR route to Professional Membership

The technical report route helps individual without any epitomize qualifications to apply for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or an incorporated engineer (IEng). The epitomized qualifications required to register are:

CEng- a recognized MEng or MSc degree or equivalent.

IEng- a recognized BEng or BSc degree or equivalent.

The TRR provides an empirical opportunity to the candidates not meeting desired qualifications for providing their skills. This is one area, where the applicants are able to show that they have same level of competence as that of a desired member. The TR must be based on a research or industrial project or a process, which can be relatable with the experiences of the applicant. It must display the application of principles of engineering and engineering fundamentals, which are related to applicant’s technical discipline. In order to show such capability, the candidates should use theories, practices, and calculations in commentary. These are helpful to portray a positive image of the applicant. Contender or the applicant should display their professional proficiency in the TR. The management report submitted by mentioning different project aspects like sourcing equipment, date of completion of the project, budgets, staff matters, control of consultants, standards consideredand the requirement for health and safety is not acceptable for the TRR.

TRR Entry Experience

Contenders should be capable to display their respective learning outcomes. IOM3 recommends to practice as this has helped them in gaining experience over a period of time. The following are the rough guide for timescale, which will help in determining the experience that an individual will require before applying for registration by this way.

CEng Academic Base

  • Level 6- BEng or BSc or equivalent – 7 years
