RegPM® is the certification program of AIPM (the Australian
Institute of Project Management). The Institute developed this program
through its Competency Standards.
AIPM developed these standards, and they have global recognition from
the industry as a good practice model for projects. Aside from that,
they are perfect for program and portfolio management, in both the
public and private sectors.
It involves an individually designed competency-based workplace
evaluation program. An applicant needs to compile proof that displays
their competency in project management. It can be awarded at one of the
below-given five levels:
- Certified Practicing Project Manager (CPPM)
- Certified Practicing Project Practitioner (CPPP)
- Certified Practicing Project Director (CPPD)
- Certified Practicing Senior Project Manager (CPSPM)
- Certified Practicing Portfolio Executive (CPPE)

Certification and assessment:
If you want to become an AIPM-certified project manager, become a
member of AIPM first. It is because the authority awards credentials
only to members. You can just be a member, but you don’t need to be
certified.
When you are certified, your certification is valid for three years.
To keep your certification current, undertake continuous professional
development (CPD) within three years and accrue 70 CPD points.
If with sufficient CPD points after three years, your certification
is automatically renewed for another three years. However, you also
need to be a financial member and have paid a renewal fee. There is not
any re-certification process as such.
In the assessment, you must provide workplace-based proof across nine
competency areas to the assessor. Do this to prove that you can apply
project management knowledge at a certain level in your workplace.
You can choose your assessor, as you are free to do it. The assessor
will walk you through the process. In addition, they will explain what
is and what is not acceptable as workplace proof.
Evaluation outcomes are either ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’. If
it is ‘not yet competent’, the assessor will show you an individual
development pathway to become ‘competent’.
Process:
The following is the RegPM certification process:
- Become an AIPM member. The appropriate membership level will be dependent on your experience, and a basic resume must accompany your application form.
- Contact and work with an approved evaluator. You can find an approved evaluator via the AIPM website. Any fee payable directly to your assessor is separated from fees paid to AIPM and applies to your assessment only. The evaluation process must be completed within six months from the date of application.
- Log in to My AIPM and fill up the RegPM online application form. An application fee is payable online to AIPM as a part of the application process.
- Your evaluator will guide you through the AIPM competency-based assessment process. At this phase, you have to complete your assessment with your chosen assessor.
- Your evaluator submits an assessment report to AIPM. After that, it will be certified by the Certification Coordinator and audited before completion.
- Nearly, one month after the successful completion of steps 1 to 5, you will get your certificate. Besides that, your name will be put on AIPM’s online register of Certified Project Managers. The validity of certification is for three years.
- Over the three years, you need to log your CPD points online via the AIPM website.
- After three years, you need to renew your certification by showing Continuous Professional Development.
