New Zealand has become one of the most loved destinations for
engineers all over the world. That’s why Engineering New Zealand
receives countless applications for registration. Most engineering
professionals dream of becoming a CPEng in this country. This status is
for those applicants who prove their competency for Chartership as a
professional engineer.
If you are one of those engineering professionals dreaming of becoming a Chartered Professional Engineer, then this blog has the necessary information for you. So, read it thoroughly.
CPEng in New Zealand:
A CPEng is an experienced engineer with registration from Engineering
New Zealand, as the Registration Authority. Like the Chartered Member
class, you have to go through an assessment to prove that you can deal
with complex engineering issues requiring expert knowledge.
The difference is that a CPEng has to show New Zealand-specific
technical expertise and get reassessed at a minimum of every 6 years.
The CPEng assessment shows that you fulfill an international standard.
It means traveling overseas to work is not an issue.
Membership and registration are two separate things. You can be both a
Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand and a Chartered
Professional Engineer by going through the same assessment.
Being a member of Engineering New Zealand shows your professionalism
and credibility. It shows that you are a part of a wider professional
community, which will help you take your technical knowledge to the next
level and maintain standards. A majority of the CPEng members like to
be members of Engineering New Zealand. Therefore, they can have access
to member resources and support throughout their career.
Over the last few years, the Government has been making potential
changes to the engineering regulations. At some stage, this is likely to
man a new licensing regime for engineers doing safety-critical work.
CPEng is likely to still remain, so undergo the assessment process now.
Do it even if you think you might need to be licensed in the future.
CPEng eligibility criteria:
For registration as a CPEng, you need to:
- Hold a Washington Accord-accredited qualification (Bachelor of Engineering, Honours) or be able to show equivalent knowledge.
- Undergo an assessment to prove that you fulfill the competency standards.
- Commit to the CPEng Code of Ethical Conduct.
- Get reassessed at a minimum of every 6 years for the maintenance of your CPEng
It’s not mandatory for you to be a member of Engineering New Zealand to apply.
CPEng annual fees and charges (excluding GST):
From 15 June 2022 to 27 July 2022, the authority is consulting on a proposed increase to CPEng fees from the 1st of January 2023. Hire a CPEng New Zealand expert to know more about it.
2022 fees:
First-time evaluation $1, 565.00 ($1,215.00 with mutual recognition)
Equivalent knowledge assessment $1, 175.00 (if not having a Washing Accord qualification)
Yearly feel $460.00
Assessment of CPEng:
Before the formal submission of your application, the authority will
ask you to submit your draft application for a member of its assessment
team to check. It’s a very important part of the whole process, as it
will provide you with feedback on the ways you may improve the quality
of your application. This way, you will have much more chances to be
successful.
After you submit your application online, a peer panel will:
- Evaluate your application against international competency standards
- Fix a meeting with you
- May ask you for more information
- Receive feedback from your referees
- Write a report providing recommendations to the Chartered Professional Engineering Council (CPEC).
