CPEng NZ Eligibility Criteria And Code Of Ethical Conduct

An engineer holding CPEng status in New Zealand must be an experienced engineer. They must have a positive assessment as proof of fulfilling a quality mark of competence. In other words, they have proven that they are capable of dealing with complex engineering problems, requiring expert technical knowledge. The professional has to go through reassessment at least every six years to maintain this status.

A Chartered Professional Engineer has to demonstrate New-Zealand specific technical experience. However, attaining this credential comes with global recognition.

A charter ship is also a protected title. The holder of this title is registered with the Registration Authority for Chartered Professional Engineers. Besides that, the professional has to stick to a Code of Ethical Conduct.
Over the past few years, the New Zealand government has been working to make potential changes to engineering regulations. In March 2022, Cabinet agreed to a new licensing regime for those engineers involved in doing safety-critical work. However, it will take some years to come into operation.

In the meantime, any engineer thinking that they desire to become a CPEng NZ should apply for assessment. They need to do it even if they might need to be licensed in the future.

Code of Ethical Conduct:

Engineering New Zealand’s Code of Ethical Conduct sketches high standards of ethical behaviour. Every member of Engineering New Zealand has to behave as per these standards. Let’s know the expectations from a CPEng status holder in New Zealand:
  1. Act with competency
  2. Report adverse consequences
  3. Pay heed to the effects on the environment
  4. Take practical steps to safeguard health and safety
  5. Report a breach of the Code
  6. Maintain confidentiality
  7. Inform others about the consequences of not following advice
  8. Behave appropriately
All Engineering New Zealand members are subject to the Code. Engineers who are registered as Chartered are also subject to a separate but identical Code. This Code doesn’t apply to engineers who are not Engineering New Zealand members or Chartered Professional Engineers.

Eligibility criteria:

To attain the CPEng status, you need to:
  1. Possess a Washinton Accord-accredited qualification (Bachelor of Engineering, Honours), or be able to show equal knowledge.
  2. Attain a positive assessment to demonstrate that you satisfy the competence standard.
  3. Stick to the CPEng Code of Ethical Conduct.
  4. Have a reassessment at least every 6 years for the maintenance of your CPEng registration.
It’s not mandatory to be a member of Engineering New Zealand for you to apply.

How to apply:

You can apply for this status through the Engineering New Zealand member area online. Engineering New Zealand members will already be with access. If not a member, just sign up to access its online area. After that, set your goal. The authority will then be able to recommend the next step to help you fulfill your Chartership goal.

Why you should hire a CPEng New Zealand competency report writer:

Only knowing the Code of Ethical Conduct, eligibility criteria and how to apply is not enough. You need to prove your competency by writing a convincing engineering competency report. Besides that, you also need to submit the required documents. All these things are not possible for a non-professional, so hiring a professional is a must for CPEng status.
