Engineers Australia Competency Standards And Their Purpose
If you dream of attaining EA membership or Chartered membership, you
must have heard of Engineers Australia competency standards. There must
be many questions and doubts related to them popping up in your mind.
Therefore, we have written this blog to help you understand them. Here,
we will tell you about the EA Stage 1 and Stage 2 competencies. In
addition, we will also tell you the required documents for the Chartered
application.
Introduction to Stage 1 competency and its purpose:
Stage 1 is the competency level you need for entry to work as a
qualified member of an engineering team. It is corresponding to the
completion of a recognized or accredited educational qualification.
Membership eligibility is based on the Stage 1 Competency Assessment.
Purpose:
Stage 1 competency is proof of your deep understanding of the body of
engineering knowledge related to your occupational category. Your
occupational category can be Professional Engineer, Engineering
Technologist or Engineering Associate. In other words, this level shows
your ability to apply this knowledge to complicated situations or
problems like a practitioner. Moreover, you need to have the necessary
skills and attributes to work as a professional. You will be expected to
be with intellectual skills. These skills will help you to test and
continually extend your knowledge through lifelong learning in formal
and informal contexts.
Stage 1 competence is a mixture of knowledge and professional attributes that are assessed as competencies.
The stage 1 standard for each occupational category consists of three competencies:
- Knowledge base
- Engineering ability
- Professional attributes
Stage 2:
The Stage 2 Engineers Australia competence standards are the
profession’s expression of the knowledge and skills base. Besides that,
they also include engineering application abilities, professional
skills, values and attitudes that you must demonstrate. Only by having
all these things, you will be able to practice independently or
unsupervised.
Purpose:
These
EA stage 2 competency standards are
used as the basis of assessment for Chartered membership of Engineers
Australia. Aside from that, they are used to assess competency for
registration on the National Engineering Register (NER). Chartered
membership is exclusive to the assessment authority Engineers Australia.
This professional credential has recognition from the government,
businesses and the general public across the world.
Another thing is
that its attainment comes with a career-long responsibility of
maintaining competency in a chosen practice area.
Having given you a clear idea of these two stages, let’s know the required documents for the Chartered application.
Required documents for Stage 2 competency assessment:
The following are the four major documents required for the CPEng application:
- Engineering Experience Record (EER)
- Engineering Competency Claims (ECCs)
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Record
- Most updated resume
Let’s know about each one of them:
Engineering Competency Claim (ECC):
The number of engineering competency claims varies between 11 and 16
according to the number of engineering competency claims (ECCs). For
example, if choosing the Engineering Competency Report pathway, you need
to submit 16 engineering competency claims (ECCs).
Each engineering competency claim presents a detailed explanation of
personal engineering involvement in technical projects. Competency
claims are generally prepared based on a few elements mentioned in
Engineers Australia stage 2 competencies.
EER (Engineering Experience Record):
EER includes your complete work experience records. Here, you need to
refer to the employer’s name under whom you worked. In addition,
mention the job roles and responsibilities you had in your employment
period. The word limit for this document is around 700 words.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Record:
This document demonstrates your knowledge and skills in the
engineering domain you claimed. A CPD Record is an integral part of the
National Engineering Registration (NER) application. Here, you have to
show the amount of CPD hours you have achieved in the last 3 years. This
document includes your commitment towards the engineering product,
criteria and technological efficiency you showed in the workplace.
Resume:
It is a must for you to submit your most updated resume. In your
resume, include your recent work experience history with the one you are
currently involved in. Your resume must be simple and written in a
precise way.
