Professional Engineers Ontario Requirements For Licence
Professional Engineers Ontario is an assessment authority that is
authorized under the Professional Engineers Act for establishing the
eligibility criteria for admission and regulating practice as a
professional engineer in Ontario. So, if want to settle down in Ontario
and work there as a professional engineer, then it is a must for you to
be licensed by
Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
The requirements you need to fulfill for license:
To satisfy the eligibility criteria for a license to work as a
professional engineer in Ontario, you need to satisfy the following
criteria:
- Need to be at least 18 years old
- Have to be of good character
Have an undergraduate engineering degree from a Canadian Engineering
Accreditation Board (CEAB)-accredited program (or have equivalent

Pass PEO’s Professional Practice Examination (PPE)
Show a minimum of 48 months of acceptable, verifiable engineering
experience, at least 12 months of which must be attained in a Canadian
jurisdiction under a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng.).
Professional Engineers Ontario will accept an application
for a license before the candidate has fulfilled all of the above-given
requirements; but, all eligibility criteria must be satisfied before
the approval of the license.
An applicant who has disabilities need accommodation are advised to
contact their staff representative. They will have their requirements
evaluated on a case-by-case basis and every reasonable effort will be
made to accommodate them.
As per PEO’s governing legislation, a candidate for a license has to
communicate adequately in the English language. As a result, if a
question is asked for this ability, Professional Engineers Ontario will
make this determination.
Minimum academic requirements:
The least academic eligibility criteria to apply for an Engineers
Ontario license, recognized by Council, is graduation from a 3-year
engineering technology program or a 3-year university science program in
a related engineering domain. The applicant who fulfills the minimum
academic requirement but doesn’t have a Bachelor of Engineering degree
may need to write and pass up to 18 exams and submit an acceptable
Engineering Report.
Reinstatement:
An applicant who has been previously licensed by Professional
Engineers Ontario and is looking for reinstatement, due to the reason
either they resigned or allowed their license to lapse, doesn’t need to
submit transcripts or write any exams. However, before submitting their
application for Licence forms, the applicant for reinstatement needs to
contact PEO’s Licensing and Finance Department so that a reinstatement
letter may be granted to them, stating the fees due and any other needs.
After receiving this letter, the applicant for reinstatement has to
submit an Application for Licence form, together with the fees shown in
the letter, and other applicable information as given in the
reinstatement letter.
Transfer:
An applicant who is licensed as a professional engineer in good
standing in another Canadian engineering association doesn’t need to
submit transcripts or write PEO’s PPE. The applicant has to submit the
latest CV for section 7.
No information is necessary for Section 8 (Referees). The application
has to be submitted by email along with the application fee.
PEO process for licensing/admission:
PEO’s admission/licensing process proceeds are given below:
- Meet the given academic requirements
- Complete Professional Engineers Ontario’s PPE
- Meet PEO experience requirements (at least 48 months)
- The applicant must have fulfilled PEO’s academic requirements before
they become capable of writing the PPE. However, acceptable engineering
experience may start once an applicant has achieved an undergraduate
engineering degree.
Would-be immigrants to Ontario:
Professional Engineering Ontario will accept and process Applications
for Licence from the applicant who has not yet achieved approval of
their immigration application from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
