Requirements for PEO Licensure

If you dream of working as a licensed engineer in Ontario, then you must have heard of PEO. You must think about what it is, its purpose and the eligibility criteria to attain a licence in this province.

What is PEO?

It is the licensing and regulating body for professional engineering in Ontario. It was founded on June 14, 1922. The professional body governs its members to work and protect the public interest. It ensures that all professional engineers meet the required qualifications for licensing. Moreover, it makes sure that only properly-trained individuals practice engineering.

As a part of its mandate, it also establishes, maintains and develops standards of:
  1. Knowledge and skills
  2. Practice for the profession
  3. Professional ethics
In addition, PEO promotes public awareness of its role.

Licensure Requirements:

To attain a P.Eng licence, you need to:
  1. Be at least 18
  2. Fulfill the academic requirements
  3. Be of good character
  4. Meet the experience requirements
  5. Pass the National Professional Practice Exam
P.Eng Application Process:

To apply for PEO’s P.Eng, you need to go through a four-stage process:
  1. Fulfill the academic requirements
  2. Pass the National Professional Practice Exam
  3. Fulfill the experience requirements
  4. Licence review and approval
In the whole application process, you will be assigned deadlines to fulfill PEO’s requirements and submit additional information as necessary. Your application may be closed if you don’t meet the deadlines.

Code of Ethics:

Through the Code of Ethics, a professional engineer has a clearly defined duty to society. This duty must be to public welfare as paramount, above their duties to employers or clients. The duty to employers involves working as a faithful agent or trustee. Professionals must keep client information confidential and avoid or disclose conflicts of interest. They need to immediately disclose any direct or indirect interest to their clients that might prejudice their professional judgement.

The code states that the engineer’s duty to the public, employer, clients and other licensed engineers is to act with:
  1. Fidelity to public requirements;
  2. Fairness and loyalty to the practitioner’s employers, associates, clients, subordinates and employees;
  3. Adherence to high ideals of personal honour and professional integrity;
  4. Knowledge of developments in the professional engineering area related to any services that are undertaken; and
  5. Competence in the performance of any professional engineering services

What is PEO EIT Program?

Engineering Intern (EIT) program gives guidance and assistance to an engineering graduate. It helps them when they earn the 48-month acceptable engineering work experience.  This program also includes yearly reviews of the experience. It is to ensure that the applicant is preparing well for licensure. The benefits of the EIT program that Professional Engineers Ontario provides are:
  1. The chance to receive detailed, confidential and yearly work experience reviews;
  2. The capability of taking part in PEO’s Licensure Assistance Program;
  3. A chance to have to Engineering Dimensions, PEO’s official journal;
  4. Opportunities for attending PEO and PEO Chapter EIT seminars
  5. Access to its online portal
  6. The chance to join a PEO chapter, attend meetings and make connections with professional colleagues
  7. Mail notices of events or things of interest related to your development into a licensed engineer
  8. The opportunity to partake in online discussions with its other members on the association’s LinkedIn discussion group
  9. Access to join the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. Besides that, you can take part in their member-only services like insurance, investment plans and an online career centre.
