UK-SPEC CPD
Every Engineering Council registrant commits to the maintenance and
improvement of their competency. In reality, it means taking on
Continuing Professional Development, also called CPD. The requirement is
set out in the UK-SPEC (
UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence) and the ICT Tech Standard, and the obligation is provided below in the CPD Code for a Registrant.
CPD has many purposes, varying to the candidate’s circumstances,
requirements and career progression. It can also have a variety of
forms. At its core is informal learning through the problems and
opportunities of working life and having interaction with others like
clients, colleagues and suppliers, which includes professionals from
other disciplines. It could be supplemented with distance learning
programs, courses, private study, preparation of presentations, papers,
mentoring, involvement in professional body activities, or related
voluntary work. This list is not complete, and the individual registrant
is best placed to determine their requirements, and how to fulfill
them.
The Engineering Council’s CPD Policy Statement explains in more
detail the nature and purpose and importance of CPD and explains the
kind of support that members can expect from their institution. CPD can
take various forms and institutions can provide direct CPD opportunities
like site visits, workshops, lectures and short courses.
ICT Technicians, Incorporated Engineers, Chartered Engineers and
Engineering Technicians make a formal promise to maintain their
competency using CPD, and record that development.
The professional Engineering institutions take up annual random
samples of registrants’ CPD records and offer ideal feedback. Recording
of CPD taken up will be compulsory for registered technicians and
engineers by January 2019.
A professionally active registrant who
continuously doesn’t respond to engage with requests for CPD records
from a Licensed Member risk elimination from the Engineering Council
Register.
