A geoscientist-in-training or engineer-in-training must pass the national professional practice exam (NPPE) before
becoming a professional. Passing it requires sufficient knowledge of
professionalism, ethics and law related to the practice of professional
engineering and professional geoscience.

Attempts:
There is a limit of 4 attempts to write the NPPE Practice Exam. When you fail on the 4th
attempt, you have to wait for one year and complete a mandatory
Remediation Plan. You need to complete this plan before having
permission to register for a 5th attempt.
APEGS NPPE staff will inform you with instructions about a Remediation Plan if you don’t succeed on your 4th attempt. If on the 5th attempt, you don’t succeed, your file will be closed, and you will have to re-apply.
Testing accommodations:
Specific testing needs can be accommodated for those taking the NPPE.
Testing accommodations may include:
- Extra breaks
- Extended testing time
- Reduced-distraction testing rooms (for a test centre only)
- Diabetic monitor or drink/food necessary during the exam for medical reasons
- Larger font (for candidates in the stock exam interface)
Generally, testing accommodations are not for English as a second
language candidates, as sufficient English language competence is a
requirement. You must fulfill this requirement for licensure in all
Canadian jurisdictions.
Supporting documents from a health care or education specialist
(written within the last three years) are necessary. Moreover, they must
outline:
- Details of the reasons why you need testing accommodations for a computer-based exam.
- Specifically, what recommendations are necessary, for example (one hour of extra time because of visual impairment)?
Submit the testing accommodation request and supporting information
before the deadline of registration. If the authority gets your request
after the registration deadline, it will reschedule your exam to the
next session.
Remote/virtual proctoring and test centres:
Since April 2020, the NPPE has moved from being administered mostly
in test centres to 100% remote proctoring. Remote proctoring is a
process allowing a candidate to take the NPPE Exam.
The candidate can take this exam via a computer with a webcam and a
high-speed internet connection. When taking the exam, the candidate will
be under the supervision of a virtual proctor via their computer.
Remote proctoring is sometimes called ‘online proctoring’ or
‘virtual’. In the context of the NPPE, these all refer to the same
process of a candidate taking the exam in their home. Besides that, they
also refer to being monitored by a proctor through the internet via
webcam, audio and so on.
Measure Learning/Proctor U is the remote proctoring company for the
exam. You will have information about it in the booking email that
explains how to book the exam date and time.
Remote proctoring will be the most chosen delivery method for the
exam going forward. However, test centres will be an option for
exceptional cases.
