What is NPPE For Licensure
‘NPPE’, you must have heard this countless times whenever
it’s about engineering licensure in Canada. You must have lots of
questions about it flashing in your mind.
Paying heed to your requirement, we have written this blog to
familiarize you with this exam. Knowing it better will help you better
prepare for it to attain an engineering licence.
NPPE:
NPPE stands for the National Professional Practice Examination. It is
a 2.5-hour, closed-book and online exam about ethics, professional
practice, engineering law and professional liability. An eligible
applicant may write this exam at any time (within the PEO-provided
timeframe). They can do so, as they attain 48 months of engineering work
experience necessary for licensure. For the licensure time reduction,
the authority encourages applicants to write the NPPE early in the
PEO-provided time frame.
The exam takes place five times a year in January/February, April,
June, August/September and November). This exam is conducted using
remote proctoring, which means applicants can write the exam from their
homes. Special accommodations can be made for those candidates who are
with a demonstrated need.
You should contact the PEO Exam Centre to know more about making special accommodation requests.
PEO’s Exam Centre will send applicants a registration notice when they become eligible for this exam.
The examination confirms knowledge of law, professionalism and ethics.
Currently, 14 engineering and geoscience self-regulatory authorities
in Canada use the
National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE). This exam adheres to all relevant standards
given in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing.
Following the standards helps ensure the exam program is valid,
trustworthy and fair (psychometrically defensible).
NPPE in Three Steps:
The following are the NPPE Ontario three steps:
- Fill out a PEO licence application. When PEO gets your completed
licence application with the payment, it will issue you a PEO file
number.
- Two months before the date of the next available NPPE, PEO’s Exam
Centre will send all eligible NPPE candidates a registration mail with
information regarding the way to register to write the exam.
- An eligible NPPE candidate wishing to write the exam at the next
available sitting needs to register. Besides that, they must make
payment as per the instructions given in the registration mail. If not
receiving your registration mail nearly two months before the sitting in
question, contact the Exam Centre.
Graduates of a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board Program
When submitting a licence application to PEO and getting a PEO file
number, you will be informed. You will be informed about your time frame
to write the
NPPE.
International Engineering Graduates:
Writing and passing a technical exam program may be necessary before being eligible to write the NPPE.
This rule applies to those who have submitted a licence application and
have been assigned a PEO number. The requirement is determined on a
case-by-case basis.
